P’ng Xiu Wen is a Pharmacy Student Research in the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the UCSI University, Malaysia. There has been a rise in public interest in the herb Clinacanthus nutans Lindau (Family: Acanthaceae), locally known as ‘Sabah snake grass’ and ‘daun belalai gajah’. The belief that it cures cancer, in addition to inflammation and various skin problems has led to the consumption of this shrub.
In an effort to discover the toxicity of this plant, P’ng Xiu Wen conducted a research using rats and mice. Her research with her supervisor Associate Professor Dr Chin Jin Han (Head of Department, Postgraduate & Research) and co-supervisor Associate Professor Dr Gabriel Akyirem Akowuah (Head of Department, Pharmaceutical Chemistry) resulted in three research papers, all of which were published in international refereed journals.
