Prosper Okonkwo

 AIDS Prevention Initiative in Nigeria (APIN) LLC,
Abuja, Nigeria

 Dr. Okonkwo joined APIN in January 2004 and became the Chief Executive Officer in 2008. He oversaw the successful transition of the affiliate of the PEPFAR-funded Harvard School of Public Health from a program to an indigenous non-governmental organization. As the CEO, he provides strategic and operational leadership as well as overall management to the organization. He also drives the realization of APIN’s strategic goals and objectives, and manages stakeholder relationships, interfacing with partners, government officials, treatment site leaderships and the APIN Board.

He has garnered quite an extensive and impressive experience in both public health management and clinical practice. Prior to joining APIN, Dr. Okonkwo worked with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), first as a State Program Adviser and then as Program Adviser for the National Reproductive Health Program. He also had a brief stint with Management Strategies for Africa as Technical Advisor/Project Manager. In addition, he has undertaken many consultancy assignments relating to HIV/AIDS Monitoring & Evaluation as well as Polio Eradication and Disease Surveillance, among others.

His clinical experience, which spanned public and private hospitals, saw him work first in Sokoto University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto and then Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital, Nnewi as House Officer, Registrar, Senior Registrar and Consultant at different times.
