Biography
Professor Ramon Gomis obtained an MD degree from the Faculty of Medicine, Barcelona University, Spain (1972), specializing in Endocrinology and Nutrition while training as resident in Hospital Clínic, Barcelona (1976). He was registrar, endocrinology at Bellvitge Hospital, Barcelona (1978), and then moved to Hospital Clínic, Diabetes Unit (1980), focusing on metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus and obesity. In 1982, he obtained a PhD from Barcelona University doing research on the metabolic basis of insulin resistance in liver cirrhosis. He then spent two years at the Free University of Brussels, Belgium, in the Experimental Laboratory of Medicine, where he worked on the metabolic steps of the fuel hypothesis of insulin secretion in islets under Professor W Malaise.
Throughout the last 20 years, Professor Gomis has been working in the field of diabetes, carrying out research on the molecular and metabolic defects of pancreatic islets in diabetes mellitus, researching approaches to maintain beta-cell plasticity of islets in diabetes mellitus in several animal models, as well as in patients affected by this disease. Currently, Professor Gomis is full Professor at the Faculty of Medicine of Barcelona University and Research Director of Hospital Clínic, Barcelona. He maintains a professional activity as a diabetologist, focusing his research on beta-cell disturbances in diabetes, in terms of translational research, by using basic and clinical approaches. He has recently been appointed President of the Spanish Society of Diabetes.
