Ramni Jamnadass has strong cross-disciplinary expertise related to agricultural sciences. Her leadership and commitment to advanced use of genetic resources beyond conservation has led to successful public private partnerships for both upstream research and downstream applications related to agrifoods. Recent successes include establishing with Mars Ltd. The African Orphan Crops Consortium Next Generation Sequencing (AOCC–NGS) state of the art laboratory to generate
sequence information to use in marker-assisted breeding of neglected African crops. She has also led a10-year program in collaboration with Unilever to domesticate and develop a new tree crop Allanblackia spp for Africa, which has recently made it to European markets. At the international policy level, Ramni and her team have been among the key contributors to the recent State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources that now has a Global Plan of Action being operationalized. In the global arena, she is also leading the explicit exposure of the value of tree foods for nutrition and health. Ramni has a leadership style that encourages innovation by empowering individuals and teams to make their own decisions. Within her program, she promotes development of innovative and practical decision-support tools, manuals and databases, e.g. the vegetation map for Africa and its linked mobile apps that are being used by international organizations like International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and World Resources Institute (WRI) to address global challenges around degradation.
