Biography
I am currently an Associate Professor and Departmental Chairperson in the Department of Physiotherapy Therapy, Faculty of Community and Health Sciences, University of the Western Cape. I am a physiotherapist by profession with an interest in the area of community development, rehabilitation, disability studies, and primary healthcare which include prevention and health promotion. My primary research focus is the rehabilitation of stroke patients at community level. My PhD thesis investigated the rehabilitation of stroke patients at Community Health Centres in the Western Cape. Current research being conducted by myself is aimed developing a programme to facilitate participation of patients with stroke in communities. I also recently convened a module on Work Integrated Practice Learning which was part of the training of Rehabilitation Care Workers for the Department of Health. In this module aspect relating to health promotion was included. As a disability advocate I am committed to addressing the needs of people with disabilities which includes health promotion for persons with in disabilities. Inclusivity and reintegration are core concepts that I focus on.
