Biography
Dr. Hicks earned his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and followed up with his doctoral degree in Organic chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University.  His dissertation was entitled: “Structure Modification Studies on the Steganin Class of Lignan Lactones. He was named Dean of the College of Science and Mathematics in January 2014, after the college’s formation during the consolidation of Augusta State University and Georgia Health Sciences University.  He holds a faculty appointment in the Department of Chemistry and Physics as Professor.  Before joining Augusta University, he was Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry for seven years (2006 – 2013) at East Carolina University.  Before that, he was Chief of the Department of Medicinal Chemistry at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, holding the equivalency of a Colonel in the Army.  After graduating college, he worked in industry at Nova Pharmaceutical Corporation, before taking his first academic position at Mississippi State University. Dean Hicks has numerous publications and presentations to his credit, has written several book chapters, and has lead in conference proceedings.  He has been issued five patents during his career and has another now pending.
