Ruth McCaffrey DNP, ARNP, FNP-BC, GNP-BC is the first recipient of the Sharon B. Raddock Distinguished Professorship for Holistic Nursing. Dr. McCaffrey has been at the Christine E. Lynne College of Nursing at Florida Atlantic University since 1999 and is currently the program director for the Doctor of Nursing Practice Program. The focus of Dr. McCaffrey’s research and writing has been in the area of creating healing environments. The idea of healing environments goes back to Florence Nightingale who wrote about creating an environment where nature can work on healing the patient. With an extensive background in the arts and humanities Dr. McCaffrey has studied the use of music both in community dwelling elders and in patients after hip and knee surgery. In partnership with the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens Dr. McCaffrey developed and tested a program using reflective garden walking for older adults with depression. This study was funded by the National Institute for Museum and Library Services and a follow up study is beginning in January 2012 funded by the Astellas Pharmaceutical Corporation. A study on the effect of lavender and rosemary to reduce test anxiety in graduate nursing students was funded by the American Holistic Nurses Association. A program of “Sit N Fit” Chair Yoga has been developed by Drs. McCaffrey and Park and a pilot study testing the ability of this program to reduce pain and improve quality of life in older adults with Osteoarthritis has been completed. Further study in this area is being developed. Based on her work on creating healing environments Dr. McCaffrey was awarded the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing Edith Moore Copland Award for Creativity. Studies completed by Dr. McCaffrey in areas other than healing environments include the development and testing of a Venothrombotic Assessment Tool for patient entering acute care facilities. For this work Dr. McCaffrey was awarded the National Bayada Award for Innovation and Excellence in Nursing Practice and the National Medical Surgical Nurses Award for Practice Excellence. In the area of research Dr. McCaffrey has published more than 35 data based publications in multiple journals. She is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Holistic Nursing and Holistic Nursing Practice Journal. In the area of practice, Dr. McCaffrey is the author of two text books that provide scholarly information for advanced practice nurses. The first was published in 2009 “NP Notes” and the second, DNP: Essential Knowledge for Advanced Practice Nurses will be published in February of 2012. Dr. McCaffrey is a member of the Iota Xi Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau, is Co-Chair of the American Holistic Nurses Association Research Committee and is a member of the Research Committee of the Society for the Arts in Health Care.
