Biography
Professor McColl has received numerous awards and scholarships since commencing his Ph.D. studies in 1984, and is regularly invited to present his work at national and international conferences, at national and international institutions, and at pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies. He has supervised over 25 Honours students, 14 PhD students and 10 Post-Doctoral Fellows. Since 1989, at which time he took up his first academic appointment at Laval University in Quèbec, he has held over $20,000,000 in grants from peer-reviewed funding bodies in Australia, Canada and the USA. He has authored over 120 original articles in peer-reviewed journals and books since 1986.   Professor McColl served for 5 years as an Associate Editor at the Journal of Immunology, including as a Primary Editor, and reviews manuscripts for a range of other international journals including Nature, American Journal of Pathology, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (USA) and Blood, as well as national and international funding bodies. His research contribution has been recognised in industry and he has consulted for biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies, including Millenium Biosciences in 1999 and Pfizer Central Research, Groton, Connecticut, USA from 1994-1999.  He has served on NH&MRC GRPs from 2003-2006, as Deputy-Chair on GRP2a in 2006, as panel selector for GRP2a and GRP2b in 2007 and as a reviewer assigner for GRP2a in 2008.  He served on NH&MRC Program Grant Review panels in 2010. He is a past member of the Research Advisory Group for the Cancer Council of South Australia.   In addition to his research, Professor McColl has strongly contributed to capacity building in research in Australia. His laboratory consistently attracts outstanding students.  Since 1995 he has supervised over 30 Honours students, and all but three have achieved First Class Honours.  Eleven have been the top Honours graduate in the School of Molecular & Biomedical Science and 2 have been the top Honours graduate in the University.  He has supervised many outstanding Ph.D. students who have won University Medals for their thesis. He currently supervises 7 HDR students. According to bibliometric analyses on 122 listed articles using the ISI Web of Science, on February 24th 2013, Professor McColl’s total citation count is 6,484 with an average citation rate of almost 55 per paper.  His H Index is 50.  He has been cited over 200 times per year 15 times and over 150 times per year 18 times since 1994.
