Maria M. M. Santos graduated in Applied Chemistry (Organic Chemistry) at the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the New University of Lisbon in 1999. In 1999, she moved to the University Paris-Sud XI (Orsay, France) to develop a project in the area of catalysis on a grant financed by European Union (Socrates program). In 2000, Maria Santos started a PhD in the field of Indolocarbazole synthesis at Lobos’s research group at the New University of Lisbon (2000-2004). In 2004 she was awarded a post-doctoral FCT fellowship to work in the area of asymmetric synthesis at the Amat-Bosch’s research group (University of Barcelona, Spain). During this period, she made important contributions on the use of (S)-tryptophanol as the aminoalcohol partner in cyclocondensation reactions to assemble complex polycyclic targets.

In 2006, she shifted her research focus and returned to Portugal to join the group of Medicinal Chemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Lisbon (FFUL) as a post-doctoral fellow. In 2008, she was hired as Assistant Researcher at FFUL through the international tender Ciência 2007 programme and began her research group at the iMed.UL research center. In 2013, she was hired by FFUL through the international tender FCT investigator.

Currently, she has an established research group of medicinal chemistry and several ongoing funded projects. The ultimate goal of her basic research is the development of general synthetic methods and strategies, and their application to the synthesis of bioactive molecules.
