Biography

Asst Prof Dinesh K. Srinivasan, MBBS, MS, PhD, Fellow (USA) is Lead for Anatomy and Co-Lead for Human Structure & Function at Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine(LKCMedicine), Nanyang Technological University. He is also Assistant Professor in LKCMedicine and Fellow in Hall of Residence 5 at NTU. He graduated in Medicine from Stanley Medical College, Chennai, India. He obtained both MS and PhD degrees from the National University of Singapore (NUS). He completed his Postdoctoral Fellowship in Molecular Cardiology at the renowned Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute & Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio, USA. He was also trained at the University of Bristol, UK, on certain aspects of human physiology, using the Human Patient Simulator. Before joining the LKCMedicine, he worked as a Clinical Fellow in Cardiothoracic Surgery at the National University Hospital and was Senior Lecturer at the YLL School of Medicine, NUS. Dr Dinesh’s passion lies in teaching and mentoring of medical students at the undergraduate as well as post-graduate (Residency) levels. He is an experienced teacher, who has lectured to medical, dental, pharmacy, nursing and life science students in NUS for more than a decade. He was actively involved in the development of modules as well as curricula for medical students at NUS. He was also an active mentor for medical students from 2003-2009, before he left for postdoctoral training in USA. He has both medical education and basic science research interests. These include augmented reality for anatomical education, 3D patient model, congenital heart disease, preeclampsia, ageing, cancer, tissue engineering and device innovations. He has acquired several research grants and published several research papers in peer-reviewed international journals including Nature, JBC, FRBM, etc. He has also presented his work at international, regional and local scientific meetings. He is also an adhoc reviewer for a number of international and local journals. In 2009, he co-edited a monograph entitled "RNA Interference: from Bench to Bedside", published by Research Signpost. He won the Travel and AAA Postdoctoral (Finalist) Awards for Experimental Biology Meetings in New Orleans, USA. He was awarded the Pewter Award in 2011 for his contributions to education in Singapore. He served as a Chairman of the School Advisory Committee (SAC) of the Lianhua Primary School and council member of the Microscopy Society (Singapore) and Singapore Neuroscience Association. He is currently a member of the American Association of Anatomists. His biography has been selected for inclusion in the Marquis Who's Who in Science and Engineering, 2007.

Research Interest

Our laboratory focuses on the fundamental events involved in cell fate determination, differentiation and organogenesis. We investigate the molecular mechanisms of neural crest and cardiac development. Specifically, we focus on molecular mechanism by which maternal diabetes affect the health of unborn fetuses, particularly those involving microRNAs. We also investigate the importance of epigenetic mechanisms in maintaining gene expression profiles in cardiomyocytes. We are currently using mouse model to study the importance of these epigenetic marks in regulating the cardiac phenotype in disease states. We also investigate the causes of cardiovascular disease by applying modern genetic technologies. The current work of the laboratory focuses on three major questions: Are microRNAs involved in congenital defects? How do microRNAs recognize their targets? How could anomalies be prevented even in the setting of maternal diabetes? Students engaged in research in this laboratory can be expected to gain understanding of mouse and human genetics, with a specific focus on how these areas of research can be translated to the clinical setting.
