Dr. Melnyk started at ACHRI in 2003, and currently he is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Developmental Pediatrics Section. One of his research approaches is closely related to the research of Dr. Jill James on Autism. They have worked more than 17 years together in the field of metabolic genomics. Additionally, Dr. Melnyk is a Director of the Core Metabolomics Laboratory at ACHRI. The laboratory maintains continuing, long-time collaborations with numerous researchers from local organizations (ACHRI, UAMS, and NCTR) and a nationwide research community (UCD, UNC, and UCLA) and has a national and international recognition. Dr. Melnyk’s scientific interests include 1) oxidative and nitrosative stress damage of biomolecules; 2) metabolomics approach for identification of biomarkers in numerous diseases, including Autism, Down syndrome, childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and congenital heart abnormalities; 3) the involvement of donors for methylation reaction in biological substrates and DNA methylation quantification in pathogenesis of diseases; and 4) the development of new analytical techniques utilizing MS-LC, HPLC-ECD, HPLC-UV, Corona (universal charged aerosol detector) for future and current research and utilization and adaptation of available techniques for ongoing research.
