Stephen J. Pandol

Professor, Department of Medicine in University of California,USA.
Biography
Dr. Pandol studies intracellular signaling systems in the pancreatic acinar cell that mediate upregulation of cytokine and chemokine expression, in turn, regulate inflammatory and cell death responses in the pancreas. These responses are central to the mechanisms of the major pancreatic disorders, pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer. His work is especially focused on determining key cell and molecular mechanisms that can be utilized as targets for therapeutic strategies. In collaboration with Dr. Anna Gukovskaya, Dr. Pandol is exploring the hypothesis that pro-survival Bcl-2 proteins regulate the amount of calcium in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) available for release into the cytoplasm through effects on Ins(1,4,5)P3 receptors and/or the SERCA pump that loads the ER with calcium. He is co-director of two centers; the Southern California Research Center for Alcoholic Liver & Pancreatic Diseases and Cirrhosis and the UCLA Center for Excellence in Pancreatic Diseases.
