Biography

Prof. Dr. Suthat FucharoenInternational Medical AdvisorBangladesh Thalassemia Foundation Prof. Suthat Fucharoen, M.D., is a Professor at the Institute of Science and Technology for Research and Development, Mahidol University, Thiland. He has continuously been conducting research on thalassemia, and his findings provide insights into different types of genetic abnormality that lead to thalassemia in Thai population. He also developed methods in diagnosis of fetal abnormality, which could be carried out through diagnosis of genetic abnormality during the antenatal care. It became a novel approach to control and prevent newborn thalassemic patient in Thailand. Furthermore, he studied the interaction of genetic defect and the different degree of disease severity, which increases the understanding of abnormality in blood clotting in thalassemic patients that occurs more rapid than among normal person. This abnormal condition leads to the treatment using anticoagulation drugs, such as aspirin. He also studied the pathophysiology of iron deficiency as well as the benefits of using iron chelating agents. He also collaborated with both domestic and foreign organizations in creating the thalassemia research network. He visited Bangladeshon 2007 and experessed his keen interest in improving thalassemia treatment and prevention in the country.  Prof. Suthat Fucharoen received "Outstanding Researcher Award 2008" in the Field of Medicine by The National Research Council of Thailand for his dedicated research in Thalassemia for more than 30 years.
