Dr. Tengvall earned his MSc in Scientific Subjects in 1982 and started in 1985 his training in biomaterials under the guidance of Professor Ingemar Lundström, at Lab. of Applied Physics, Linköping University, Sweden. His PhD thesis, dealing with ‘hydrogen peroxide - titanium interactions, was successfully defended in late1989. After a 4-year fellowship at Linköping University, Dr Tengvall became University Lecturer in1994 and received the position as Professor in Biomaterials at Linköping University in 2000. He was awarded the Nobel Berol Research Award in 1991, best Paper 2000 in Journal of Materials Science: Materials in Medicine, and International Fellow of Biomaterials Science and Engineering (FBSE) in 2008. His major external fundings sources have been Vetenskapsrådet (VR), VINNOVA, and Alice and Knut Wallenberg foundation. In 2004-2009 he was the executive person in a large strategic research programme named ‘Materials in Medicine’ funded by Landstinget in Östergötland and Linköping University. Dr Tengvall has published 114 articles, approx 90 conference contributions, 30 invited lectures and holds 6 patents/patent applications. He has supervised 11 PhD students and held between 2000-2004 position as Chairman of Civil Engineer programme ‘Engineering Biology’ at Linköping University. He arrived to Gothenburg University in 2008. His research is focused on modification and characterisation of biomaterial interfaces, and activation of coagulation and complement at interfaces
