Biography

 Dr. Timothy Benton currently serves as Associate Professor, Program Director and Regional Chair of Family Medicine. He completed undergraduate training at Dallas Baptist University and earned a medical doctorate from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at Lubbock. After medical school he completed Family Medicine residency training at the University Texas Health Science Center at Tyler and a Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine.

Since completing residency his career has included rural private practice for six years in Plainview, Texas, two years of private practice in Amarillo, Texas and now ten years as TTUHSC faculty. While in private practice Dr. Benton held several distinctions including medical directorships for hospice, nursing home and home health care organizations. Three years after joining the faculty Dr. Benton was appointed residency Program Director and has held that position for six years at TTUHSC Amarillo and now TTUHSC Permian Basin.

Prior to his appointment as Regional Chair, Dr. Benton served on numerous elected and Dean appointed TTUHSC committees including the Education Policy Committee and the Faculty Executive Committee. His academic pursuits have been recognized with several TTUHSC departmental, Regional Dean and Dean awarded teaching honors, including Dean appointment to the TTUHSC Teaching Academy. Dr. Benton has served as peer reviewer for the American Family Physician and Postgraduate Medicine journals. He has authored several journal publications, as well as a textbook chapter in Essentials of Family Medicine and monographs in Epocrates and Essential Evidence Plus.

Finally, Dr. Benton participates in TTUHSC's interprofessional training of students and residents. He currently holds an appointment in the TTUHSC School of Health Professions as Medical Director for Physician Assistant Program in Midland, Texas.
