Biography
V Patel is a psychiatrist with a primary interest in global mental health. My passion is to contribute to the goal of improving access to mental health care and promoting the human rights of people with mental disorders worldwide. The Wellcome Trust has supported my work since 1996 and I have been a Senior Research Fellow in Clinical Science since 2005. I was the Founding and Joint Director of the Centre for Global Mental Health, a partnership of the LSHTM with Kings Health Partners (www.centreforglobalmentalhealth.org) and handed over this role to Professor Ricardo Araya in October 2014. I am based for most of the year in New Delhi where I am Joint Director of the Centre for Chronic Conditions and Injuries at the Public Health Foundation of India, and in Goa working with Sangath, a mental health research NGO which I co-founded with other local colleagues in 1997. Since 2011, I have served on two Government of India health committees, the Mental Health Policy Group and the National Rural Health Mission ASHA Mentoring Group.
