Vivien Coates

Biography

Dr. Vivien Coates hold a joint appointment as Professor of Nursing Research with Ulster University and Assistant Director of Nursing (R&D) in the Western Health and Social Care Trust in Northern Ireland. My overall remit is to promote research and develop practice. Within Ulster this activity relates to teaching and research related activity. Through my joint appointment with Western Health and Social Care Trust (previously Altnagelvin Hospital H&SS Trust) I work with nurses and midwives to promote research along with other health care professionals in the Trust. I have helped develop the Strategy for Nursing in which R&D activity is embedded. I am part of the R&D Management Committee for the Trust to advice on research governance issues. My work at the Trust involves developing evidence based practice to underpin nursing care. To do this I run workshops, learning sets, meet with ward managers and participate in Trust Nursing Governance Committee meetings. I supervise, or am the name Principal Investigator, for a range of projects based in the Trust. She has research interest in I am a Research Active Member of University Staff. I was returned in the recent Research Excellence Framework review and the previous 3 Research Assessment Exercises. I was a member of the internal panel responsible for reviewing papers to be submitted to the REF and thus helped prepare our submission (62% papers 3* and 17.1% 4*). I was the first nurse in Northern Ireland to be made a Principal Investigator with the (then) Research and Development Office, Belfast. I lead the University of Ulster Research Centre: ‘Managing Chronic Illness’, am Co-Chair for the Translational Research Group Endocrinology, Diabetes & Nutrition and also for the NI Clinical Research Network: Diabetes. I Chair of the Northern Ireland Diabetes Nurse Study Group and Member of Executive Committee for All Ireland MRC Hub for Trials Methodology Research (2012-2015). I regularly review for a range of journals and also have been a panel member and reviewer for a range of external funding bodies. Dr. vivien coates Dean has 67 peer reviewed publications.
