Associate Prof Huang Weihong is an eminent economist whose works have widely appeared in premier internationally refereed journals in economics, finance, physics and applied mathematics. He is a leading expert in economic dynamics and financial market modelling. He is one of the pioneers in applying nonlinear dynamics and chaos theory to economics and finance. The heterogeneous agent model (HAM) he built up together with his dissertation supervisor was the first deterministic dynamic model that provides an economic mechanism for why and how financial crises like Black Monday 1985 can occur endogenously without external shocks. This model now has become one of the classics as well as the most-cited article in the literature of heterogeneous agent’s models and financial modelling. A chapter in Handbook of Computational Economics is devoted to discuss the model and its later development. The original article is also reprinted in International Library in Critical Writings in Economics with honour.
