William Whitelaw joined RANA in June 2006 as the Medical Director of RANA’s Pulmonary Function Lab. Together with Dr. Jeffrey Mellor, Dr. Whitelaw also provides interpretation services for all pulmonary function and arterial blood gas tests performed in RANA’s lab. William Whitelaw initially trained in physics (BSc, 1964), but quickly moved into medicine (MD, McGill, 1968), and respiratory physiology (PhD, McGill, 1979). With qualifications in internal medicine and respiratory medicine, Dr. Whitelaw joined the Faculty of Medicine, University of Calgary in 1976. During his time at the University of Calgary, Whitelaw acted as Director of the Foothills Hospital pulmonary function laboratory and taught both undergraduate and graduate courses in respiratory physiology, respiratory medicine, and the history of medicine. He retired from the Faculty at the University of Calgary in 2007. Whitelaw’s active research interests include control of breathing, respiratory muscle function, sleep apnea, health care delivery, and hiccoughs.
