Yae Kanai is the chief of Division of Molecular Pathology, National Cancer Center Research Institute, Japan. She received M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Keio University in 1989 and 1993, respectively. Then she moved to National Cancer Center Research Institute and assumed her current position in 2002. She is a Japanese Board-certified pathologist. She develops scientific ideas on the basis of findings from the routine diagnostic pathology work, and follows them up using a molecular pathological approach. She has especially focused on epigenetic events during carcinogenesis since 1995, and has revealed the significance of DNA methylation alterations at the precancerous stages associated with smoking, chronic inflammation and persistent viral infection. She is now in a responsible position in CREST/IHEC team and is also engaged in exploration of biomarkers and drug targets based on multi-layer/integrative omics analysis in tissue specimens of liver, urinary tract and lung cancers.
