He is an Assistant Professor for James & Jean Culver Vision Discovery Institute. He received a Doctoral Degree (PhD) in Cellular Biology from University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN USA in the 2001-2006, followed by a Postdoctoral program in the 2006-2010. He is a graduated from Beijing Medical University in the 1990-1995, with an immediate post-graduation from Truman State University, Kirksville, MO in the 1999-2001. As an Assistant Professor, he is a recipient of many awards and grants for his valuable contributions and discoveries in major area of research. His research interests, as an Assistant Professor lie in Cellular Biology and Anatomy. He is the Editor-in-Chief/Editorial Board Member of many peer reviewed journals and his area of expertise, as an Assistant Professor credits him with many publications in national and international journals.
Dr. Liu's research interest is to identify genetic risk factors related to age-related complex human diseases, including but not limited to primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG), keratoconus, exfoliation glaucoma (XFG), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease), and Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Dr. Liu is also interested in the role of genomic structural variation (i.e., DNA copy number variants) in human disease.
He is currently characterizing genetic risk variants identified through large scale genome-wide association studies (GWAS) using bioinformatics, molecular genetics, and animal models.
He is also interested in applying next-generation sequencing, such as exome sequencing, to identify genetic mutations in multiplex families affected by ocular disorders, such as keratoconus.
