Prof. Emeritus Eugene D. Weinberg received his PhD (1950) at the University of Chicago. From 1950 to 1992 (at retirement age of 70), he was a faculty member in Microbiology & Medical Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington. His research initially focused on production and function of microbial secondary metabolites. In 1965, his research shifted to suppression of growth of infectious microbes and cancer cells by host restriction of iron availability. He pioneered in the discovery of the host iron withholding defense system. In recent years, he has been concerned with iron as a risk factor for osteoporosis, diabetes and complications of pregnancy.
