Biography

Paola Salvatore, MD, is an Aggregate Professor of Psychiatry in the Section of Psychiatry and Department of Neuroscience at the University of Parma, Italy, and a Research Associate in Psychiatry at McLean Hospital Bipolar and Psychotic Disorders Research Program and the Department of Psychiatry of Harvard Medical School. Recently she has been nominated Associate Professor of Psychiatry by the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research Scientific Commission. Dr. Salvatore studies the psychopathological phenomenology of antecedents, prodromes, initial onsets, as well as longitudinal courses of first-psychotic affective and nonaffective illness episodes, applying Jaspersian and Husserlian approaches to descriptive psychopathology and phenomenology of subjective experiences of unfolding and evolving psychosis by the means of Basic Symptoms and Anomalous Self-Experiences conceptual models. Her aim is to better understand how early profiling of heralding psychopathology in initial psychotic illnesses and their premorbid phases can predict future diagnostic trajectories, longitudinal morbidity patterns and clinical and functional outcomes. She is also studying in collaboration with researchers at University of Massachusetts at Worcester and at Swinburne University in Melbourne, Australia, nonlinear dynamics measures of biological rhythms of psychomotor activity in mood and psychotic disorder patients monitored by actigraphy. Her aim is to investigate nonlinear dynamics parameters of locomotor activity as potential biomarkers of psychopathology including suicidal ideation and behaviors in affective and psychotic disorders. A magna cum laude and with special mention graduate in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Parma in 1989 with a dissertation on the biological basis of suicide, and a first-class honors graduate in Psychiatry in 1993 from the same institution with a thesis on the conceptualization of affective mixed states in Kraepelin’ and Weygandt’s works, Dr. Salvatore has been establishing her academic, research and clinical position at the Psychiatric Clinic of the University of Parma as a Post-doctoral Fellow, Tenured Researcher, and Tenured Aggregate Professor since 1994, 1998 and 2002 respectively. In 2000 she also joined the International Consortium for Bipolar and Psychotic Disorders Research at McLean Hospital, and has been working ever since as a Research Associate and Co-Principal Investigator in the McLean-Harvard First-Psychotic Episode Project led by Dr. Mauricio Tohen and Dr. Ross Baldessarini. This dual academic and research affiliation has allowed Dr. Salvatore to developing and establishing an international collaborative study on first-psychosis onset, course and outcome that has led to several peer-reviewed scientific publications. In 2004 and again in 2006 she received the NARSAD Young Investigator Award to further study psychopathology of first-psychotic episodes as well as investigate categorical versus dimensional approaches in the diagnosis of first-psychotic episodes
