Gliomas are brain tumors arising from glial cells. 80% of gliomas are malignant in nature. Astrocytoma’s, Oligodendroglia’s, and Ependymomas are the three different types of gliomas.
Epidemiology and Treatment
Gliomas are characterized by headache, nausea, vomiting, speech difficulty, memory disturbance, seizures, and vision problems. Treatment usually includes surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Temozolamide is an effective drug used in chemotherapy for high grade tumors.
In Belgium, glioma cases are about 3.4% in males and 3.1% in females. The relative survival rate in males decreased from 64.6% to 48.2% in five years from 2004 to 2009.In female’s relative survival rate also decreased from 57.2% to 56.1% during five consecutive years.
