Various types of specimens are used for testing in clinical pathology such as: Blood, Urine, Sputum (also called phlegm), Feces and Other body fluids.
Blood can be examined in three ways: As a whole, as plasma or as serum. Blood is usually drawn with a sharp sterilized needle from the body and taken for testing. It is taken from a vein (usually in the forearm). Such procedure of drawing blood from the veins is also known as venipuncture. The other way of collecting blood for testing is by pricking in the finger which is then squeezed to draw blood. Such procedure of drawing blood is known as finger stick.
