Vitiligo is a skin disorder that is characterized by selective melanocyte destruction and simultaneous appearance of de-pigmented macules that over the time enlarge, coalesce and form patches. It has been suggested that vitiligo is caused by an autoimmune response that is usually mediated by the cytotoxic T cells against the melanocytes. The destruction or the lyses of melanocytes give a direct proof of an autoimmune phenomenon.
