Tooth decay is one of the common problems in dentistry and ongoing research proves that Glass ionomer cement has advantage over silver amalgam. Glass ionomer releases fluoride which helps in preventing cavities and intermediate layer of adhesive to bond to the tooth.
One of the major drawback of composite material is that it need the use of adhesive to bond the filling to the tooth which results the process of filling more sensitive. An interdisciplinary team of researchers decided therefore to develop a new alternative mercury-free material. The choice fell on glass ionomer cement.
