This study provides a comprehensive review of various medium access control (MAC) schemes in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs), which is essential for the applications of both road safety and the comfort of driving. The chapter first discusses the requirements and challenges for MAC design in VANETs and introduces the relevant standard as a fundamental knowledge for research. Furthermore, some key issues and possible solutions are addressed by the study of current papers and the presentation of our works, including multichannel access control, quality of service scheme in MAC layer, and MAC broadcast mechanism.
