The aboveground biomass in tropical forests is mainly contained in trees. The tree biomass is a function of wood volume, obtained from the tree diameter and height, architecture and wood density. It can be quantified by a direct or an indirect method, where the biomass is quantified using a mathematical model. An allometric model can be site specific when elaborated to a particular ecosystem or can be general when used at different sites.
