South African legacy of apartheid has created massive social and economic inequalities along racial and gender lines. This resulted in under-representation of black South Africans and women in higher echelons of industry and the corporate world, especially at decisionmaking levels. These effects spilled over to all spheres of the society, with the labour market being a distorted one, characterised by inequality in access to education, skills, managerial and professional work based on race and ethnicity.
