Nicotine addiction will cause cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, reproductive toxicity, impaired wound healing, peptic ulcer disease, gastro- oesophageal reflux and addiction. This causes several reactions in your body: heart rate and blood pressure increase, blood vessels constrict, causing a temperature drop in your hands and feet, brain waves are altered and muscles relax. Scientists have long known the brain’s stress and reward systems function independently. However, the new research shows our brain’s stress neurotransmitter, called corticotropin-releasing factor or “CRF,” is present in dopamine neurons in the reward system operating in the brains of drug addicts.

Treatment The Nicotine Dependence Clinic offers several specialized outpatient treatments for anyone who wants to quit or reduce their tobacco use. NRTs available in Canada include nicotine gum, patches and inhalers. This well-established treatment can double the likelihood of smoking cessation.Over the past four decades, cigarette smoking has decreased considerably in Canada, from an estimated 50% in 1965 to a current rate of 19%. Moreover, smoking rates have dropped in the critical 15 to 19 year age group from over 40% in the early 1980s, to 28% in 1999, and to 15% in 2006.  However, the new research shows our brain’s stress neurotransmitter, called corticotropin-releasing factor or “CRF,” is present in dopamine neurons in the reward system operating in the brains of drug addicts.
