     Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder resulting from the body's inability to properly use or produce enough insulin. It?s a chronic disease with no known cure. Being overweight is closely tied to the development of type 2 diabetes. Overweight children have an increased likelihood of insulin problems. As the body struggles to regulate insulin, high blood sugar leads to a number of potentially serious health problems.

  • Type 2 Diabetes in children

     A total of 255 diabetic cases were identified, 227 type 1 diabetes mellitus (218 were Chinese), 18 type 2 diabetes mellitus and 11 secondary diabetes. 246 patients were Chinese and 9 non-Chinese. The age-standardized incidence of type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus in southern Chinese children in Hong Kong was 1.4/100,000/yr and 0.1/100,000/yr respectively for children < 15 yr of age during the study period.
