Gary R Pickrell completed his Ph.D. in 1994 from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia. He has 14 issued patents with around 150 publications. He served as the Program Committee member for 24 International Conferences and is an Editorial Board member for 6 journals. He served as Advisor or Co-advisor of seven graduate students from underrepresented groups, and graduate committee member for over 25 graduate students from underrepresented groups. He also received Virginia Tech Outstanding Assistant Professor Award in 2005 for his teaching. He was also honoured as R&D 100 Award winner October, 2004 (for a fiber optic sensor suite - one of the top 100 products developed in the world). He has served as a reviewer for proposals from US (DOE), Chinese and Russian governments and has been an invited presenter/participant in several DOE, NSF, and USGS workshops. Currently, he is Professor, Materials Science and Engineering Director of Surface Engineering, Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Director, for NanoBioMaterials Laboratory.
