Diphtheria is a bacterial infection affecting the throat, and salivary glands causing fever, swollen glands and appearance of a sheet of thick, grey material covering the back of your throat. It is caused by Corynebacterium diphtheria. Botulism is an illness caused by toxins from bacteria called Clostridium botulinum. Three types of botulism are Foodborne botulism where the bacteria produce the toxin in canned food. Wound botulism produces toxins in wounds and Infant botulism where bacterial spores grow in a baby's intestinal tract. Symptoms of botulism include difficulty swallowing or speaking, dry mouth, drooping eyelids and paralysis.
