Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis

It is one of the Neurological disorders where Neurons death occurs which controls voluntary muscles. The causes for ALS is unknown for about 90- 95% cases. In the extreme condition, the patient will have difficulties in speaking, swallowing and breathing. The greatest risk factor is Traumatic Head injury. Researchers are focused in the role of Glutamate in the degeneration of motor neurons since glutamate is found to be in higher levels in the people with ALS. Riluzole is the only FDA approved medication for ALS.

  • Intermittent positive pressure ventilation
  • Bilevel positive airway pressure (BiPAP)
  • Biphasic cuirass ventilation (BCV)
