Statins - Statins are the best medications for lowering "bad" LDL cholesterol. They are also the most widely used cholesterol drugs. Statins cause LDL levels to fall by up to 60%. They also raise levels of HDL or "good" cholesterol. And they can help lower the level of triglycerides. Taking a statin for a year or longer can even slightly shrink plaques that cause atherosclerosis.

Calcium Channel Blockers - Dihydropyridine calcium channel blockers (CCBs) reduce cardiovascular events in patients with diabetes and hypertension. Amlodipine was less effective than irbesartan (Avapro) and no more effective than placebo in reducing progression to end-stage renal disease.

Surgery - Atherosclerosis is usually controllable with treatment, but recurrences can occur. Restoring blood flow with a vascular procedure provides good relief of symptoms, although as with the treatment of any significant disease, complications may occur.  The blockage in the arteries to the leg has progressed to the point that there is severe reduction in the blood flow to the foot. This can be extensive enough to put the foot at risk of amputation. This extreme variant of PAD is referred to as critical limb ischemia (CLI) and it is often imperative in this situation to restore blood flow to the foot with a vascular procedure.

Nutritional Therapeutics - Nutritional factors such as magnesium, folic acid, vitamins B12 and B6, l-arginine, and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) appear to be significantly beneficial for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), and in the prevention and arresting the progression of HF and cardiac arrhythmias. Additionally, ingestion of adequate amounts of protein and maintaining normal concentrations of plasma albumin seem to be essential for these patients. These nutrients closely interact with the metabolism of l-arginine-nitric oxide (NO) system, essential fatty acids, and eicosanoids such that beneficial products such as NO, prostaglandin E1, prostacyclin, prostaglandin I3, lipoxins, resolvins, and protectins are generated and synthesis of proinflammatory cytokines is suppressed that results in platelet anti-aggregation, vasodilation, angiogenesis, and prevention of CAD, and cardiac arrhythmias
