Bioseparations engineering refers to the systematic study of the scientific and engineering principles utilized for the large-scale purification of biological products. separating the biomass (microbial cells) generally carried out by filtration or sedimentation, drying, crystallization, chromatography and centrifugation or ultra-centrifugation. If the product is biomass, then it is recovered for processing and spent medium is discarded. If the product is extra cellular the biomass will be discarded. Ultra filtration is an alternative to the centrifugation. Separation may be Solid-Liquid Separation, Liquid-Liquid Extraction, Precipitation and crystallization. purification of biomolecules generally involves the use of cross flow filtration or normal flow filtration combined with chromatographic separations. Bioprocess filtration involves Chromatographic removal of endotoxins, Laboratory filtration, Bioprocess purification and removal of cell debris, advanced chromatographic techniques for Enzyme purification, SDS-PAGE. 250 more institutes are conducting research on Bioprocess filtration. Biotechnology has undergone phenomenal growth in recent years. Most of this has been in fundamental areas linked to cellular and molecular biology, biochemistry and biophysics. This includes monoclonal antibodies used for the treatment of cancer and multiple sclerosis, plasmids for gene therapy, cytokines and interleukins. Many of these products need to be extensively purified before they can be used for their respective applications.
