In order for a normal cell to transform into a cancer cell, the genes that regulate cell growth and differentiation must be altered.  The recent surge in genome sequence data and functional genomics research has ushered in the discovery of aberrations in a third category: gain-of-novel-function mutation (neomorph). These neomorphic mutations, which can be found in both tumour suppressor genes and oncogenes, produce proteins with entirely different functions from their respective wild-type (WT) proteins and the other morphs.

This market reached about $4.0 billion in 2014 and is expected to reach $4.3 billion in 2019, registering a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 1.3% for the period 2014-2019.
