Emotion Regulation in Autism

Autism spectrum disorders mainly conceived as social disabilities because lack of social interaction becomes most prominent characteristics. Emotional dysregulation is a key component in difficulties for children as well as adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASDs) in education, relationships and employment. Emotions also include physiological expressions and responses as they play critical role in regulations of memory, attention, perception and physical response. Some individuals with ASDs learn to suppress rather than managing negative feelings. This help them appear more socially acceptable, but the required internal effort has the negative consequences of distracting from social interplay, increasing isolation, escalating physiological stress, and hindering the growth of relationships because the underlying negative emotions continue and grow.
