Endocrine Hypertension and Related Syndromes

Hypertension is caused due to the elevation in the blood pressure levels which is defined as systolic blood pressure >140 mm Hg. Endocrine hypertension is the raise of hypertension caused by the imbalance of hormones. This frequently involves the pituitary or adrenal gland. The person who is more likely to have hypertension before the age of 30 with a strong family history of adrenal gland tumors , hypertension or develop hypokalemia should undergo endocrine hypertension screening. the endocrine hypertension can be caused due to the over or less production of hormone or when effected by tumors.

Endocrine hypertension can be caused either due to the excess or low production of hormones. The most common condition of endocrine hypertension is primary aldosternoism. This condition is caused due to the excess production of aldosterone by the adrenal glands. If this condition is left untreated it may result in the enlarged heart. People with systolic blood pressure of  120 to 130 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure of 80-89mm Hg should be diagnosed as prehypertensive individual and should be followed a healthy life style pattern in order to prevent chronic cardiovascular diseases. People who have hypertension at the age of 30 oe people with strong family history of adrenal gland disorders must go through the endocrine hypertension screening

  • Apparent mineralocorticoid excess (AME)
  • Licorice ingestion
  • Gitelmans syndrome
