Energy and environment are co-related in the technological and scientific aspects including energy conservation, and the interaction of energy forms and systems with the physical environment. The levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide has increased by 31% between 1800 and 2000, going from 280 parts per million to 367 parts per million. Scientists predict that carbon dioxide levels could be as high as 970 parts per million by the year 2100. Different factors are responsible for this development, such as progress with respect to technical parameters of energy converters, in particular, improved efficiency; emissions characteristics and increased lifetime. Various environmental policies have been implemented across the globe for reduction of GHG emissions for improvement of environment.

Energy and Environmental policies are inextricably linked. All energy production and consumption has environmental impacts. The energy and environmental objectives are inter-linked in many aspects such as energy efficiency and reducing energy use, saving energy can help avoid impacts associated with extractive industries and with energy generation, transformation, distribution and consumption in general. Reduced use of fossil fuels based energy and improved energy efficiency aid in reducing GHG emissions, air pollution, impacts to surface and ground waters, habitat fragmentation and biodiversity disturbance through infrastructure and land use. Increased use of renewable energy sources is a more environmental friendly approach towards sustainable development. Climate change and global warming concerns, coupled with high oil prices, peak oil, and increasing government support, are driving increasing renewable energy legislation, incentives and commercialization.
