Facial Reanimation

Facial reanimation is the process of surgically reanimate the face by correcting the facial paralysis; congenital or occurs through trauma or disease. This disease can be a consequence of traumatic facial nerve injury, congenital syndromes, and viral infections etc. Facial reanimation is complex surgeries that provide motion to the face of a patient who suffered from facial paralysis. Using microsurgical strategies, a muscle from the internal thigh is transplanted to the influenced side of the face, reconnecting nerves and blood vessels. The nerve that control face muscles is called facial nerves if this nerve does not work properly, so it affects the movement of the muscles in the face and the muscles will be paralyzed, sometimes called as Facial Plasy, which usually effects the one side of face. Prolonged paralysis can result in ocular complications, articulation difficulties, impaired feeding, and difficulty in conveying emotion through expressive movement. The main aim is to restore some voluntary movement of the face. Various reanimation techniques are available to regain the function and are based on the cause of the type of injury, facial paralysis, its location, and the anticipated duration. Mainly two types of surgical procedure are used to reanimate the face: Muscle Transfer- taking or moving muscles and tendons from one part of the body usually from legs or abdomens to the face. Nerve Grafting- It means moving nerves from different parts of the body to the face.
