Healthcare Informatics and Ethics

Health informatics ethics will combine information from medical ethics and from informatics ethics.  This is related to recent history of these two fields so that the reader can understand the context within which modern health informatics ethics is to be discussed.  Because  of  the  unique  nature  of  medicine,  this  chapter  will  spend  considerable  space  examining  recent medical ethics first.

As in all other areas of healthcare, ethical issues arise in the use of information technology. Principles of privacy, the patient's right to autonomy and decision-making in the management of their personal health information, and concepts of fairness and equity in access to care and to information are just some examples of areas in which ethics can inform the provider's strategies and decisions.
