Immunology of Infections

Immunology of infections means the battle between pathogens and the host immune defences. Immunology is the branch of science concerned with the various aspects related to immune system, innate and acquired immunity. Immunology also deals with laboratory techniques involving the interaction of antigens with specific antibodies.

Immunology of infections means the battle between pathogens and the host immune defences. The immune system has developed a variety of approaches to control viral and bacterial infections which range from direct killing of pathogen to elaborate cytokines that inhibit replication.  Pathogens have countered by developing a variety of immune evasion mechanisms that inhibit cytokine function and prevent immune recognition of infected cells.  Faculty and student efforts to define and characterize these opposing mechanisms will undoubtedly lead to improved treatment of infectious diseases ranging from AIDS and parasitic infections to sexually transmitted diseases and the common cold.
