Microbial Physiology and Screening

                                               Microbial Physiology and Screening

Microbial Physiology: Prokaryotic and eukaryotic microorganisms-Comparison, Flagella, motility and process of chemotaxis- uptake and utilization of substrates, Sporulation and germination- Two component signal transduction. Microbial nutrition and growth-Physical and Nutritional Requirements of Cells - batch, continuous and synchronous cultures, growth kinetics – Control of microbial growth. Microbial biofilms - The physiology and collective recalcitrance of microbial biofilm communities: Quorum sensing and quenching mechanisms. Microbial stress responses: Heat, temperature, pH Microbial energy stores, Microbial fuel cells and applications. Special emphasis will be placed on demonstrating the role of prokaryotic structures in evolutionary adaptation, disease establishment and their potential as targets for the development of antibiotics and/or therapeutics.

Market Analysis-

The industrial microbiology market is large and growing, the second largest diagnostics market after clinical diagnostics in test volume and market value. More than 90,000 industrial plants worldwide conduct close to 2 billion tests each year, which represents a market value of $6.5 billion. Because the demand for consumer products is growing as the world’s population grows, increases in product quality and safety testing appear to continue undaunted by current worldwide economic problems.

Bacterial physiology is a scientific discipline that concerns the life-supporting functions and processes of bacteria, which allow bacterial cells to grow and reproduce. Microbial growth and metabolism play key roles in all of the major geochemical cycles of Planet Earth, consuming and replenishing carbon, nitrogen, hydrogen and sulphur in the biosphere. Microbes can be extremely beneficial. They are essential tools in environmental biotechnology, biodegradation, composting, the supply of fresh drinking water, the safe disposal of sewage, and in food, wine and beer production. But they can also cause disease and food deterioration. Microbial physiology is the study of microbial structure and function, in particular, how microbial activity responds to changes in the environment. It is therefore the key to controlling detrimental aspects of microbes, and to exploiting them for the good of the human race.
