Track  2.  Cornea

The cornea is the translucent part of the eye that covers the anterior portion of the eye. It covers the pupil, iris, and anterior chamber (fluid-filled inside of the eye). Its function is to refract, or bend, light. It is composed of proteins and cells. It does not contain blood vessels. Some of the blood vessels may cloud the cornea and prevent it from refracting light properly and adversely affect vision. The cornea inclines to repair itself quickly from minor abrasions but deeper abrasions may cause scars to form on the cornea that causes the cornea to lose its transparency, leading to visual impairment.

 

Cornea displaces depending on the disease that is causing vision problems. For example, Fuchs’ dystrophy only have a problem with the back layer of the cornea and require single cell layer from donor cornea in a procedure known as DMEK.  Others conditions such as Keratoconus, the disease only affects the front part of the cornea, only that diseased portion is replaced in a procedure known as DALK. These two advanced surgical procedures are more sophisticated and provide much faster recovery than a standard full thickness transplant called as Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK) where all layers of the cornea are removed and changed with donor tissue.

Eye cancer is a term used to define many types of tumors that can occurs in various parts of the eye. Eye cancer occurs when healthy cells in or around the eye change and grow uncontrollably, forming a mass called a tumor. High-throughput sequencing is helping to deeply understand the cancer genome, and the mechanisms that cause tumor progression and affect treatment response. The NGS (Next Generation Sequencing) technology is used for tumor profiling and assess signalling pathways within the tumor. The gene changes that make eye cancer cells, are different from normal cells and play an important role in treating eye melanomas, lymphomas, and other eye cancers in the future. There are different types of biological therapies to extravagance eye cancers.

Eye drops are saline-containing drops used as an ocular route to control. The condition being treated, that contain steroids, antihistamines, sympathomimetics, parasympatholytics, beta receptor blockers, parasympathomimetics, prostaglandins, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), antibiotics, antifungal, or topical anesthetics. Sometimes they do not have medications and only lubricating and tear-replacing resolutions.  Eye drops have less risk of side effects than oral medicines, and such risk can be reduced by occluding the lacrimal punctum, for a short while after instilling drops.

Track 10. Glaucoma

 

Glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness. It is a condition that cause group of eye diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve and vision loss. The most common type is open-angle glaucoma with less common types is closed-angle glaucoma and normal-tension glaucoma. Open-angle glaucoma develops slowly over time and there is no pain. Closed-angle glaucoma can present gradually or suddenly may involve severe eye pain, blurred vision, mid-dilated pupil, redness of the eye, and nausea. Vision loss from glaucoma, once it has occurred, is permanent.

 

Variations of OAG are primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), normal-tension glaucoma (NTG), pigmentary glaucoma, pseudoexfoliation glaucoma, secondary glaucoma and congenital glaucoma.

 

Variations of closed angle glaucoma are acute angle closure glaucoma, chronic angle closure glaucoma, and neovascular glaucoma.Most of the people not knowing that they have glaucoma. It has no early symptoms or pain.

 

According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology , glaucoma affects 2.2 million people in the United States, and the number is increase to 3.3 million by 2020 as the U.S population ages.

Track 13. Ophthalmic instruments

 

An optical instrument either processes light waves that can enhance an image for viewing, or analyzes light waves that regulate one of a number of characteristic properties. Telescope is the first optical instruments were used for magnification of distant images, and microscopes used for magnifying very tiny images. These instruments have been greatly improved and stretched into other portions of the electromagnetic spectrum. The binocular device is generally a compact instrument for both eyes designed for mobile use. Camera could be considered AS optical instrument, with the pinhole camera and camera obscura being very simple examples of such devices.

Track 15. Pediatric and binocular vision

 

Problems with eye focusing and vision often lead to symptoms such as headaches or eyestrain andthat can cause serious problems such as lazy eye or non-use of one eye. These problems  found in individuals of all ages. The Binocular Vision Service provides complete evaluation of vision functions and offers a wide variety of treatment and management options for adults and for children. Vision therapy is designed to improve various visual problems through eye exercises. The goal of vision therapy is to teach or reinforce visual skills under controlled conditions. The movements reinforce visual skills in an effort to improve vision and to relieve symptoms. Advances in Pediatric Research publishes original research articles with a potential impact on the fields of neonatology, pediatrics, and adolescent medicine.
