Ornithology

"Ornithology" is derived from the ancient Greek ornis ("bird") and logos ("rationale" or "explanation"). Ornithology is thus a branch of  zoology that concerns the study of birds.  This study on birds have helped develop several key concept in evolution, behaviour and ecology such as the process of speciation, ecological niches, guilds, biogeography, phylogeography and conservation

Ornithology is one of the few sciences remaining where non-professionals regularly make significant contributions. The areas where non-professionals make their most important contributions are in the areas of distribution (finding out where birds occur naturally) by contributing sight records, and in the understanding of changes in bird populations - through annual bird counts around the world.
