Pollution and its Controlling Measures

Pollution control can be defined as the intermixing of contaminants into the natural resources leading to their degradation. Methods of air pollution control can be divided into two categories: the control of particulate emissions and the control of gaseous emissions. The term particulate can be defined as tiny particles of matter such as smoke, soot, and dust that are released during industrial, agricultural, or other activities. Gaseous emissions are industrial products such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, and oxides of nitrogen also released during various manufacturing operations. 

The method of controlling air pollution at source is complex. It can be controlled by proper use of raw materials, site locations for industries and using the modern technologies to reduce emission. They are different methods of pollution control in the industries. These methods either destroy contaminants or remove them from an exhaust stream before it is emitted or released into the atmosphere. The control techniques used depend on the nature and properties of the gas or vapor. Gaseous air pollutants can be controlled by different methods and they include controlling methods include absorption, adsorption, and combustion or incineration.  Particulate controlling equipment include several alternative. They are gravity settlers, cyclones, electrostatic precipitators, fabric filters, and wet scrubbers.
