Generally speaking, wastewater treatment plants are constructed to protect water environment from excessive overloading with different kinds of pollutants. So they have to fulfill the desired effluent standards. Often in practice, the results are not in accordance with design parameters expected from the project. Some common reasons for malfunction will be illustrated by several examples. There may be problems with the sewage system, design of plants technical equipment, hydraulics and of course with the maintenance connected with undertraining of personnel.

The measurement of water quality is a very exacting and time-consuming process, and a large number of quantitative analytical methods are used for this Purpose.
