Refractive Surgeries

If a person has a refractive error, such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism or presbyopia, refractive surgery is a method for correcting or improving your vision. There are various surgical procedures for correcting or adjusting your eye's focusing ability by reshaping the cornea, or clear, round dome at the front of the eye. Other procedures involve implanting a lens inside the eye. This track will focus on topics like Phakic Intraocular Lenses, LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis), Wavefront LASIK, LASEK (laser epithelial keratomileusis), PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), CK (conductive keratoplasty), Intacs corneal rings, RLE (refractive lens exchange), EpiLasik, PRELEX (presbyopic lens exchange), AK or RLI (astigmatic keratotomy), RK (radial keratotomy).

Phakic IOLs (intraocular lenses) are an alternative to LASIK and PRK eye surgery for correcting moderate to severe myopia (nearsightedness), and in some cases produce better and more predictable vision outcomes than laser refractive surgery. LASIK, LASEK and PRK are procedures performed on the stromal tissue of the cornea with a laser. Epi-LASIK is a newer laser eye surgery procedure that was developed to solve some of the potential problems with LASIK and LASEK. It's somewhat of a cross between the two, but differs in a few key areas. Radial keratotomy involves altering the shape of cornea by making microscopic incisions on the surface of the cornea with a diamond blade. Astigmatic keratotomy (AK) is done to correct astigmatism. In AK parallel incisions are made in the peripheral cornea to allow the cornea to assume a more natural spherical shape. Thus, blurred or distorted visual imagery is eliminated. Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser-assisted sub-epithelial keratectomy (or laser epithelial keratomileusis) (LASEK) are laser eye surgery procedures intended to correct a person's vision, reducing dependency on glasses or contact lenses. The other refractive error correction surgeries that are going to be focussed in this session are Presbyopic Lens Exchange (PRELEX) and Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE), Conductive Keratoplasty, Intacs Corneal Rings and Vision Correction Surgery.
